About Affirmations

What is an Affirmation?

An affirmation is a form of autosuggestion in which a statement of a desirable intention or condition of the world or the mind is deliberately meditated on and/or repeated in order to implant it in the mind.

Why affirmations work?

Affirmations, when practiced deliberately and regularly, reinforce a chemical pathway in the brain, making the connection between two neurons stronger, and therefore more likely to conduct the same message again. Thus a thought repeated is reinforced thereby forming habits of thought. A positive reinforcement forms a positive thought habit.

Improvements in brain imaging technology are allowing scientists to see how brain activity correlates with certain kinds of thoughts and emotions and then measure how a shift in thinking can improve mood and well-being.

In fact, neuroscience is confirming that a daily dose of positive, motivating, inspiring, affirmative thinking recharges our mind just electricity recharges the battery of a cell phone.

How to use affirmations?

Most of the proponents of self-affirmation agree that effective power statements adhere to three key conditions, summed up by Jeff Staniforth, the respected metaphysical scientist behind the Sculptor 3 Affirmation Software, thus:

  1. They’re stated in the present tense. For example; “I now have a wonderful job.”
  2. They express a positive statement. For example: “I am now perfectly healthy in body, mind and spirit.”
  3. They’re short and specific.

How I applied affirmations in my life?

I have been through all possible downs and ups of life. And at every stage, an inspiring thought or word or sentence from the writings of Peale or Carnegie or Vivekanada or Napoleon Hill or Paramahansa Yogananda moved me on as I clung to it and affirmed it over and over, at times loudly, at other times silently to myself.

How many times I have affirmed on waking up and before going to bed, and during the  waking hours, ”Day by day, in every way, I am getting better and better‘ or ‘Danger and I are brothers; I am more dangerous that danger‘ or ‘Sticks and stones can break my bones but words cannot hurt me‘ or ‘I am the child of God‘ or ‘But for the grace of God, there go I‘ or ‘Father, fill me peace and harmony, peace and harmony, peace and harmony‘.

Every affirmation worked. They brought me prosperity, friends, happiness, peace and the love of my life: a doting wife.

Why do I write?

There is a saying that the teacher learns more than the pupil, that those who give benefit more than those who receive. I write the thoughts in Affirmative Thinking  not only to share thoughts which helped me but also to help you become a giver.

I will be happy if the words I write will be the words you will remember and keep, will be the words that will help you endure and inspire you to change. I will be doubly delighted if you are drawn to my work because it speaks to you and if it’s a part of your story as much as it is mine*.

Why do I call it Affirmative Thinking?

I believe in what Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith calls “affirmative thinking, affirmative realization.” As he rightly puts it, “the very nature of the universe is affirmative, for life continues to affirm itself throughout eternity.” As such I call my blog Affirmative Thinking.
